Fort Myers Fire DepartmentIn early 2009 the City of Fort Myers arbitrarily reduced company staffing from 4 Firefighters to 3 Firefighters violating the collective bargaining agreement between the City of Fort Myers and the 1st District of IAFF Local 1826 Inc.  A Special Magistrate from the Public Employees Relations Commission issued a ruling to the City of Fort Myers advising them to restore NFPA 1710 staffing levels.

The City of Fort Myers Manager William Mitchell ignored this ruling from the Special Magistrate as it is only a ruling and not binding.  The International City Managers Association proved going from 4 Firefighter to 3 Firefighter crew sizes reduces crew effectiveness 27%. This staffing violation is in the grievance process at this time.

The City of Fort Myers Fire Department responds to almost 18,000 requests for service on an annual basis.  Is it okay if the city shuts down units or stations near your Family?

Then on September 23rd, 2009, the Fort Myers City Council, Fort Myers City Manager, and Fort Myers Mayor approved a budget that created a paradigm shift in the City of Fort Myers Fire Department.  As a result the following changes have occurred:

  • Elimination of 21 Open Firefighter Positions
  • Reduction of 38 total Fire Department positions
  • Engine Co. Staffing from 4 FF’s to 3 FF’s

  • Shut Down & Closure of Ladder 12, Rescue 11 & Rescue 13
  • Daily Staffing reduced from 33 FF’s to 21 FF’s per 24 hour shift
